300 Reasons Why We Love The Simpsons

8 Their proof to TV executives that dumbing up, rather than down, has nothing to recommend it except awards integrity, ratings, laughter and profits.

36 The 10 Harvard-educated writers.

37 Those critics who got it wrong at the start by billing the Simpsons as 'America's most dysfunctional family.' It's now clear that Homer almost always ends up doing the right thing; it is, it could be argued, one of the most moral shows on television today. According to Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams: 'It's one of the most subtle pieces of propaganda around in the cause of sense, humility and virtue.'

61 Agent Mulder: 'We want you to recreate your every move the night you saw this alien.' Homer: 'Well, the evening began at the gentleman's club, where we were discussing Wittgenstein over a game of backgammon.' Mulder: 'Mr Simpson, it's a felony to lie to the FBI.' Homer: 'We were sitting in Barney's car eating packets of mustard. Ya happy?'

126 Homer [to God]: 'You're everywhere. You're omnivorous.'

212-219 Itchy and Scratchy film titles. Bang the Cat Slowly, Field of Screams, The Last Traction Hero, Aesophygus Now, Skinless in Seattle, Scar Trek: The Next Laceration, Why Do Fools Fall in Lava? and... Reservoir Cats.

275 And the Devil uses Microsoft.

Favorite ko yung last. Hehehe. Kung may pera lang ako, give me Linux.

Boy, 14, shoots principal.

So ano kaya ang problema niya. Sabi nga ni Colin Farrell sa Phone Booth, it's the killers the people remember not the victim.

she doesn't only like her spices, she's an activist too.
So many Filipinos dream of technicolor glory. Growing up in an average family in Bicol, outside Manila, Chin Chin Gutierrez had those dreams, too. She has made her fantasy a reality by appearing in movies and starring in one of the country's most popular soap operas, Habang Kapiling Ka (While We're Together). Now, at 29, Gutierrez is using her fame to spread a message often ignored in the Philippines: there are natural resources aside from beauty and talent. Her Mother Earth Foundation organizes workshops, tree plantings and litter cleanups to try to save the country's forests, beaches and waters. Gutierrez's particular passion is Mount Banahaw, an extinct volcano 100 kilometers south of Manila that is believed to be mystically endowed—but a site frequently desecrated by garbage-strewing visitors. "I used to believe that the earth could replenish and heal itself," Gutierrez says. Now she knows the opposite: the environment needs our help to preserve its future. "There's a proverb: 'The earth is not given to you by your parents. It is loaned to you by your children.'"
The cover isn't as flattering as the pic inside. Parang medyo matanda ang dating niya dun, but anyhow I think she enjoyed the shoot. Passion daw talaga niya ang environment. She wouldn't even hurt a fly--masinsinan niyang kakausapin para umalis ang langaw sa lugar. I'll see if I can post a pic here, but do check it out in your nearest news stand.

puma ang sneakers ko

Asteeg sana. Napaka-explicit it's too good to be true. Hehe.

Viva!

Si Jol showbiz na rin. How're you Astrid? This means there will be three versions of who, I mean, what Rufa Mae Quinto is doing and I'll be the only one who'll still think she's single. Bahala na. Kaaliw mga kwento ni Jol. Unfortunately, di nya ipopost yung viva chika nya kasi organic na sya. Hehe. We'll have to get him drunk then.

O pahinga muna! Saan kayo magseSemana Santa?

but i was ready for my close up

So Abi and I went to Industry Lounge last week for the "What's the Story, Manang Glory?" Jourdan invited us, he's the one who organizes the Rhyme and Rhythms gigs for Greenbelt. Strange fact no. 1: Neither of us girls knew where Industry Lounge was exactly. All we knew was that it was near Cash N Carry and it was in Filmore Street. We got off the MRT at the Buendia stop, and the cabbies there pointed us to Cabbie Boy as our designated driver. Cabbie Boy said that all the cabs there had drivers under 25. So he asked us where we were headed. "Ah yun yung bar ni KC Montero. We were invited nga sa opening. May rave party." Whoa. Cabbies who rave. Hehehe.

We had this confusion as to what time the gig would start. Text message said 7pm, e-mail invite said 8pm. We arrived at 730pm for a gig that would start pala at 9. Hah! Eager beavers. Industry Lounge had a Sanctum-y feel to it. Mostly the same crowd of well-scubbed artiste-y types who do spoken word. Only difference is, everyone seemed to know everyone. Towards the end of the night, this band called Rocksteady played something which I recognized as vaguely Stephen Speaks-esque, which turned out to be a Speaks track indeed. More songs to which everyone knew the lyrics. Everyone but me and Rasta Guy, whom some of you thought is befitting of a police lineup. "Why are they singing Christian pop rock?" he asked. Uhm, kasi they're all from the same church? I was surrounded by Christians, which I didn't really mind. They were joking pa nga. Ipe-pray over daw nila ako. The conversion didn't work on me. Nyahahaha, evil evil me.

My beef about this whole thing. Dalawang tao na ang naglabas ng photos nila from the gig, si Mojoflea at yung foreigner dude who takes really great pics. I could see part of my shirt in one of them. But gah! Di yata talaga kami photogenic nung gabing iyon. Nung nag-improv na yung mga taga-acting workshop, sobrang asar-talo si Snow White, who said she was having an affair with the dwarf Dorphy, na tatay nina Eric at Epy. Hehehe. Nakakatuwa. Dorphy saved the performance from falling apart.

Jourdan and Honey also acted out an excerpt from Subtext, yung nanalo sa one-act play ng Palanca last year. They did the part with the "labo mo kasi walang U na may umlaut yung text mo sa akin." Nakakatawa. Hehe. Which reminds me. Hoy Jol! Kelan na ang Adventures from the BIR mo? Kuwento naman kayo. Magsusulat na ako ulit.

pepato*

So there's this eccentric local actress sa isang soap opera. Her character profile says na isa siyang dating model dito sa Pilipinas who left the country to try to make it big sa States pero nauwi siyang high class prosti dun pero nakapag-asawa ng isang matandang mayamang Italyano. Nagkaroon siya ngayon ng Franco-Italian, uhm, heritage. Kaya pag nagda-dialogue siya, may pakanta-kanta pa in foreign languages. This used to amuse us to no end. Kasi we liked her, and all the badings found her fashion sense wagi. Plus plus points because she seemed intelligent kahit kinakausap niya yung mga langaw sa set. Saka the director adores her so much so pinapabayaan yung mga improv niyang kung anu-ano.

Then the other director had her under his charge. We're not talking Shakespearean blank verse or anything ha. Just ordinary day-to-day people talking. Pero kulang nga raw so kailangang isakto sa measurement. Kaya ganito ang ginagawa niya:
Actress: What are you talking about? Pepato!
Director 2: Cut! Cut! Please stick to the dialogue. From the top tayo.
So ulit na naman. But Actress insists on putting "pepato" in her dialogues para mag-even out ang measurement. Finally, Director 2, who directs in the theater and speaks fluent Spanish and French took Actress aside.
Director 2: Hija, I know you're supposed to be an Italian's wife, but please don't add "pepato" to your lines!
Actress: But Direk! The lines need several extra syllables to fit the measurement!
Director 2: Kahit na. If you want to add something, pick another word, not pepato. Do you know what the word means? Pepper! You are saying, Anong ibig mong sabihin, paminta!
Word got around that Actress was probably browsing some menu in a restaurant, found the word "pepato" interesting, rolls nicely on the tongue and thought, "Ah, I can add this to my dialogue to add some flavor!" Hehehe. Hehehe.

*Not related to the restaurant Disaster Mari is talking about.

I crave your flesh, Clarisse....

Ayon sa isang study na lumabas, mayroon tayong natural tendency towards cannibalism: "Deep in the recesses of the human heart, lurking guiltily beneath the threshold of consciousness, there may lie a depraved craving — for the forbidden taste of human flesh. The basis for this morbid accusation, made by a team of researchers in London, is a genetic signature, found almost worldwide, that points to a long history of cannibalism." Hehehe.

My parents can supply the entire university with mocha frapps, so admit me na.

They're not held to the same academic standards as everyone, but they are expected to win their games, and at least graduate. But in the last decade, tumaas ang porsiyento ng "development admits" -- Ito yung bagong trend na naispatan sa college admissions sa Tate. Kahit di ka gaano matalino, pero mayaman at puwedeng mag-donate ang parents mo ng isang building sa university, aba they can bend the standards for you. Anong klaseng giftedness kaya ang tawag dun? And I'm wondering kung mayroon or magkakaroon na ng ganun sa peyups. Matatawag bang commercialization ang ganun? We're not going to sell idle lands or build malls inside the university, pero kukuha tayo ng mga estudyante na may lower UPG and ask their parents for donations na lang.

Gumagawa ng move ang Supreme Court nila to lessen the development admissions.

unhappy april fool

HE ORDERED A glass of lemon water, a pack of cigarettes and an apple. He went out to the balcony overlooking Victoria Harbour and asked his waiter for pen and paper. And then he hurled himself off the balcony. Cheung was a movie star, a singer and an icon of Chinese pop culture. His body—the famously beautiful face eerily unmarred—was later found by a foreigner on Connaught Road.

[ article from newsweek via psychicpants ]
Leslie Cheung's death overshowed even the SARS situation in Hong Kong. He starred in films by John Woo and Wong Kar-Wai. He was in Happy Together with Tony Leung, and it turns out he's been suffering from bouts of depression. He usually wore casual clothes, but the day he died, he wore a suit and hung out in his favorite hotel. Then he took a dive, on April Fool's nonetheless.

soaring high in the sky

Happy birthday kay Astroboy! Kakapanganak lang niya nung Monday, 7 April 2003.
Back in 1951, Osamu Tezuka, a Japanese cartoonist, dreamed up Astro Boy, a lovable robot with laser fingertips, searchlight eyes, machine guns in his black shorts, and rocket jets flaming from his red boots.

To make the 100,000-horsepower tyke seem really futuristic, the artist gave his creation a truly far-out birth date: April 7, 2003.

Tokyo may not yet have flying cars, but Astro Boy's official birthday on Monday marks the coming of age of Japan's animation industry. No longer marginalized, the bare-chested rocket boy with the spiky hair, known in Japanese as Tetsuwan Atomu, is being hailed with fireworks, costume parades, intellectual seminars, an exhibit in Parliament and a $1 million diamond-and ruby-encrusted likeness in a downtown department store display.

"We Japanese want to live alongside robots, that is why we love Astro Boy," said Takao Imai, a 72-year-old lawyer, dressed in a white smock and a white wig of cotton curls to look like Professor Elefun, Astro Boy's eccentric scientist protector. Carrying a white cotton Astro Boy birthday cake, Mr. Imai was preparing to parade with his 5-year-old grandson Akinojo Ogura, who had just wowed a preparade rally with a spirited rendition of the Astro Boy song.

Saturday Fun Machine instant flashback grabe. Umiyak ako nung namatay siya. Tama ba ako ng naalala? Basta alam ko isa siya sa mga 7 powerful robots of the world.

smell me

A decade-long study found that men perceived women to be 12 pounds lighter when wearing a pleasant, floral-spicy perfume. Hmm...perfume induced optical illusion? Totoo ba yan? Basahin n'yo yung article here. [ via kinkish.org ]

Not totally unrelated, dropped by Robinsons Place a while back and discovered na may Rustans Essences na rin sila dun sa Padre Faura wing. I wanna be an Ibiza Hippie. Kaya lang daw the berry smell doesn't last that long. Sexy graffiti na lang? Lecheng Escada fixation talaga.
